29 out of 14000 isn't bad!

It was about time to put on a fresh coat of paint on the site, seeing as the old style was just some theme I found. Unfortunately, I really hate design. Well, to be fair, I really enjoy design, I just hate doing it. When it comes down to it, I'm really not that great at it, and the simplest of tasks end up taking a long time, or not looking the way I want it to.

On a slightly related note, I found this fun site, which tests your "Colour IQ". I'm happy (I think) to report that I scored 29, whereas the worst score is like 14000+ (I assume the random people who just click "Test Me!" when they first open the page). I don't think I can be upset with that, given that I thought I was colour blind. (Here is where the real designers choke on their coffee, wondering if I see the irony in that.) Anyhow, enough of that, I'm hoping it works across multiple browsers, I (un)fortunately do not have a windows computer to check on.

On an even more distantly related note, I stumbled across an old copy of Hemera's Photo Objects, which is a collection of 50,000 images on transparent backgrounds. I remember looking around the web previously, and realizing that Hemera had discontinued the product, and switched their whole business to online stock photography. As such, there was no viewer available for the custom file types (.hpi). After finding a few Windows based solutions, I came across some information explaining how the JPG and PNG files could be separated and re-combined.

I proceeded to then spend about an hour trying to figure out how to do that, before finally admitting defeat and posting my question on stackoverflow. It was promptly answered in about 30 seconds, and I was the proud new owner of a simple program to extract the image files. I should really learn to trust people smarter than me.

So in short, I was able to find an image of a leaf in that mess, and now you'll see it above.

New Macbooks

... are pretty. The SO's computer (my 2004 era powerbook) died a horrible death a few weeks ago, and she had the foresight to wait out the next Macbook revision, to finally realize her lifelong dream of owning an iBook (yes, that's when it first started).

I was tasked with installing various software on it, and I have to say they are pretty slick little things. I'm not a big fan of the black keyboard (yes aesthetics matter!) but overall it's a great upgrade for her. I've been toying with the idea of picking one up myself, as coding in a coffee shop seems good on paper. Perhaps I'll wait until the next revision too.
